Demands

This week's value is based on an expression in the Babylonian Talmud, in the Tractate Bava Batra.

“We are forbidden to make a decree on the community that the majority will find unbearable.”

The value is not to make unrealistic demands on others. Discuss your thoughts on this concept. Have you been a recipient of such a demand? Or have you made such demands on others? Also, do you believe this is a fair idea?

How do we judge others' work versus our own? What kind of barometer do you use?

I have more to say on this idea, so post by Wednesday 5PM for full credit, and be ready for a second set of marks from the second half of the week.

In reality, there is not much that is not unrealistic demand-wise. If it is something so far-fetched such as committing a crime, then it would be unrealistic. In my own opinion, many things are based out of necessity. This is a fair idea. If it was unfair, it would involve not being able to make any demand whatsoever.

I think it basically showing care and/or awareness towards the people around you. And it means you must discuss the maters with others and not just assume control and make decisions yourself. Its a team effort. So everyone must decide together.

no i have never been a recipient.
Yes i have but i have taken into consideration the good of others.
It doesnt matter if its fair or not, it matters how efficient it is.

This quote means do not demand unfairly on others. I agree, you should discuss the matters with other and not make the decision yourself. It should be fair towards everyone. No i have not been a recipient. Yes this is fair.

I agree with this idea. Lets face it unrealistic demans are not going to happen. you cant force somebody to do something that is impossible to them. this seems to be common sense.

first of all, we can't always judge other people work compared to our own. i could be a scientists and someone else an artist. i think people must judge their own work

Nothing is too unrealistic. Unfair, yes, but not unrealistic. My example is a kind of weird, but it's not that bad.
Let's say a girl was 18 and she wore a purity ring to promise herself until marriage. If her boyfriend demands her to do it with him, and she does not want to, this is somewhat unfair to both of them.

Have you been a recipient of such a demand? Not really.

Or have you made such demands on others? I don't think I have.

Also, do you believe this is a fair idea? I agree with Yossi. It doesn't matter if it's fair or not, it matters how efficient it is.

Well, in general minors are required to follow rules with which they dont agree. For instance, we have a rule at school about chewing gum. Most students would not agree with this.
But we believe in democracy, which agrees with the Talmud. Decisions affecting people should be made fairly with the majority in agreement.

demands sound bad unless you say please.
A person would only do an unfair demand out of fear, and to be able to give such demands u have to be feared, or you wouldn't be taken seriously. war is a demand in a way, kill or be killed

u should not demand something if people are gonna think unfavorably about u and ur demand

I agree with this idea. Its wrong to to make a demand that is unreasonable to others.
